Democracy Camps for Young People

“Youth” is a new working area of FES in Thailand. In 2006, the FES cooperated for the first time with an independent youth network “Young People for Democracy Movement, Thailand” or YPD by organizing “Democracy Camps for Young People”. The objectives were to build up an understanding of historical developments in Thai politics, the Thai students’ and people’s movements for democracy, the principles and structures of democracy in politics and economics along with discussing some political ideologies. Being empowered by this educational program, the young participants were further encouraged to engage themselves actively in politics and social activities. The first Democracy Camp took place in May and targeted young working people as well as young political and social activists from various civil society groups. The second Camp held in October was mainly designed for students from different universities in Thailand. In both activities, participants discussed problems and obstacles of the current young people’s movements. They also developed a common strategy for political movements in all different youth groups in order to strengthen their network.
